FEATURED ARTICLE: Fatigue

by Denise Kennedy, a member of the Elementalities family

Fatigue can be a sign of serious underlying problems
such as diabetes, anemia, hormonal imbalances, or
chronic fatigue syndrome, so if you suspect these
illnesses, see your health care provider. But fatigue
is usually an indicator that our bodies simply need
more sleep. It is also an indicator that we may need
more water. Dehydration saps our energy levels.
While doctors say we need at least 8 glasses of water
a day you will need more than that if you are a coffee
or cola drinker as these culprits act as diuretics.
Also, let’s not forget the spirit’s role on our
bodies. Unreal expectations can create frustration
and discouragement which creates a decrease in energy
levels. Reevaluate your expectation levels for
yourself. And, last but not least, find things in
your life to be thankful for. Gratitude creates
positive energy flow and joy; and joy creates energy.
Here are some other things to take note of as well:
1. If your energy levels sag more in the winter
months get outside into some sunshine for at least an
hour a day.
2. Sticking to a continual routine can make us feel
tired and unmotivated. Do something different even if
it is just to take a walk or read a book.
3. Some studies tell us if we live in a dark house
with muted colors we tend to have less energy. If you
don’t want to repaint your house, try adding accent
colors in bright reds, greens, or yellows.
4. Diets high in fat are hard to digest and suck
energy in the process. Eat more fruits, veggies, and
carbohydrates.
5. Throw out the standard of eating 2 or 3 big meals
a day and go for 4 or 5 small meals. This keeps our
metabolism burning steadily instead of working harder
all at once.
6. Exercise increases our energy levels, so get out
there and DO something.
7. To recharge energy levels remember to make a
little time everyday, even if it is just for a few
minutes, to rest and relax. The best way to do this
is to spend those few minutes doing something you
enjoy and not something you are duty bound to do.
8. Stop smoking. Decreased oxygen levels equals
decreased energy levels.
9.Avoid natural stimulants such as ephedra, kola nut,
gaurana, or yerba mate’. These just aren’t good for
you.

HERBS, VITAMINS, AND MINERALS TO TRY

A. Licorice is an adrenal tonic. Typical dosage: 3
cups of tea per day. (steep 1-2 tsp of dried root in
1 cup of hot water for 10-15 minutes); or 1/8 teaspoon
to 1/2 teaspoon of tincture 3 times per day. CAUTION:
Do not take internally for more than 6 weeks. Do not
take if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure,
heart or liver disease, diabetes, or severe kidney
disease. Licorice may also worsen the effects of
drugs that cause potassium loss.
B. Reishi Mushrooms. Typical dosage: 1/3 oz chopped
or powdered reishi mushrooms to 3 cups of water; boil
30 minutes; strain, divide and drink during the day.
C. Shisandra. Typical dosage: 3 cups of tea per
day (simmer 1 teaspoon of dried fruit in1 cup of hot
water for 10 to 15 minutes); or 1/8 to 1/2 teaspoon of
tincture 3 times per day. CAUTION: Increases effects
of antibiotics.
D. Astragalus. These sticks can be added to soups,
stews, rice or any food that simmers for at least 30
minutes. When cooking is complete remove the wilted
stick and discard. Typical dosage: 3 cups of tea per
day (simmer 1/3 to 1/2 ounce of the dried herb in 3 cups
of water for 30 minutes); or 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of
tincture 3 times per day; or eight or nine capsules of
400-500 milligram capsules per day.
E. Peppermint is mildly stimulating but also eases
anxiety and tension, and it eases any gastrointestinal
upset that may be present along with the stress that
is causing fatigue. Typical dosage: 1 cup of tea as
often as needed. CAUTION: Avoid peppermint if you
have esophageal reflux or heartburn.
F. Kelp. Typical dosage: 4 capsules daily.
G. Iron. 12-15 mg per day.
H. Potassium and Magnesium. Typical dosage: 100-200
mg of each per day for up to 6 months. Consult a
doctor before using these if you have heart or kidney
problems or are a diabetic.
I. Vitamin C. Typical dosage: 4,000 mg per day for
people with persistent fatigue. High doses can cause
temporary diarrhea in some people.
