FEATURED ARTICLE: Wrinkles
by Denise Kennedy, a member of the Elementalities family
If you are over 30, wrinkles can be the bane of your existence. For some reason we have come to equate them with the badge of age; a subconscious signifier of our mortality. This particular line of reasoning is seeing the glass as half empty. I like to think that the laugh lines around my eyes and mouth are a testament to my personal accrued life experiences and are reminders and lessons to how I have responded to those experiences. I prefer to see them as the glass being half full.
Repetitive facial expressions are not the only way you get wrinkles. There are genetic factors, of course, and if you are a smoker, and female, you can expect to get them around your mouth. But, and I think it is ironic, the number one reason we get wrinkles is by pursuing the one thing we think makes us look younger and sexier--the sun and the use of tanning beds. The ultraviolet rays of the sun penetrate below the skin’s surface and encourage wrinkles to develop by damaging connective fibers in the skin.
If you fall in the group that think wrinkles are the glass being half empty, there are some things to do and to try to help soothe wrinkles and to help prevent them in the first place.
COMMON SENSE AND PRACTICAL ADVICE
*Stay out of the sun, or use a sunscreen of at least SPF 15, and forget about tanning beds. One study shows that about 80% of visible aging is a result of repeated sun exposure.
*Use a product with AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids). These are acids from sugercane, milk, and fruit that help loosen dead and damaged skin cells that allow newer, healthier skin cells to emerge. Use a 10% solution on your face and a 5% solution around your eyes.
*Use a moisturizer every morning instead of applying moisturizer only at night.
*Keep your weight down and steady as constant weight yo-yoing causes the skin to sag.
*Don’t smoke.
*Wear sunglasses while outside to avoid repetitive squinting.
*Get plenty of exercise. Exercising promotes circulation, delivers nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells, and creates new blood vessels.
*Get plenty of sleep. They don’t call it “beauty sleep” for nothing.
*Drink plenty of water.
*Vitamin C supports the formation of collagen, the connective tissue that gives skin its structure and tone. Recommended dosage: 500 milligrams daily.
HERBALS
Start with an ounce of honey or a cup of cooled herbal tea. (Chamomile tea calms the skin while Nettle tea nourishes it.) Add a drop or two of essential oil of sandalwood, lavender, clary sage, or chamomile. Remember that essential oils are concentrated and only a few drops are necessary. For oily skin, try a citrus variety like lemon, orange, or tangerine. For dry skin, make it rose or patchouli. As with any herbal remedy, give it time to work. Allow 6 to 8 weeks before deciding if it works for you.
Weekly or monthly herbal facial steams:
*For normal to dry skin use two parts calendula flowers, two parts borage, one part lavender, one part chamomile, one part rose, and one half part fennel seeds.
*For an oily skin steam use two parts comfrey, two parts calendula, two parts witch hazel, one part yarrow, and one part rosemary in a bowl of boiled water.
Instructions for the steams: Place three cups of water in a tea kettle and bring to a boil, then pour the water into a heat resistant bowl and add about a cup of your herb blend. Drape a towel over your head and lean over the bowl (but not so close that it burns) for 5 - 20 minutes. Follow with toner and moisturizer. My personal favorite is avocado oil.

THE ELEMENTAL MENTALITY
This week's tip for simplifying your life naturally:
Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by
deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up
enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. --Samuel Ullman
